The Nocé House
The Nocé House was built in 1876, after the great fire of 1875 burned down over half of Virginia City, Nevada. In the 1800's, the house was used as a boarding home and residence for R. Nocé and his sister and brother-in-law. R. Nocé ran a grocery store attached to the house from 1876 until his death in 1911. The house remained occupied from that time until 1948, when it saw its last resident before being abandoned. From then until 1982, the house stood vacant. It was finally condemned and ready to fall to the street when it was purchased by Dave and Zoann Abel.
The structure can be found on the main drag of Virginia City, directly north of the historic business district. Dave, having been a jeweler since 1974, and Zoann, being a hair dresser since 1969, decided this would be a great location for their businesses.
A monumental task stood before them. The structure would need to be rebuilt from the foundation up to the roof. After five years of sacrificing much time and money, all of their hard work finally paid off, and they opened their doors in 1988.
Today, Dave and Zoann run both of their businesses out of this historic shop and even have a massage therapist working on the premises. It is truly a piece of living history.
Many people have described the Nocé house as a museum, and it's easy to see why. Dave maintains a display of his historic Virginia City bottle collection, as well as a complete history of the house and many historical objects from the Comstock year-round for any visitor to his shop to enjoy.
Dave's gallery features many custom made and unique "Made in Nevada" pieces of jewelry and artwork on display and available for purchase. They are truly one-of-a-kind items in a one-of-a-kind setting.
In Dave's studio, guests are welcomed to stop by and enjoy the setting, discuss local history, or order custom-designed pieces of jewelry to own and cherish for themselves.
